Activities & Events Hosted
Children's Sunday School Ages 3 yrs -5th Grade
Teachers: Cindy Hardy
For more than 20 years, Mrs. Hardy has been teaching our youngest Sunday School class the basic concepts of the Christian faith: prayer and love. She encourages her students to learn from their Bible lessons and apply the simplest message to their everyday life in word, thought, and action. As a result of her guidance, her students have been known to give a helping hand around the church, including those who are new to the class!
Teacher: Darla Ruffner
Mrs. Ruffner is our other children's Sunday School teacher, rounding out the group with a focus on older elementary students. Students in the Primary class are taught the important fundamentals of Jesus, prayer, well-known biblical stories, and lifelong applications. "We have a friendly classroom where we respect each other," says Ruffner. "We share stories, learn together, and do fun activities that help discover the wonderful way Jesus loves us."
New Beginnings
Teachers: Kent (Jessie) & Ruth Cook
Adult Target Groups: Young Adult, Midlife Adult, Senior
Mr. & Mrs. Cook originally started New Beginnings Sunday School class with the intention to help young parents strengthen their Christian faith in the home. Having raised several foster children themselves, they thought they could offer friendly advice from personal experience mingled with biblical teachings regarding families. But because of the Cooks' new and intriguing approach to Sunday School--filling the need to educate and minister to families--the class grew in size and even attracted parents of grown children!
The New Beginnings class is now extended to adults of all ages. Lessons are generally derived from popular Christian reading resources, including Rick Warren's The Purpose Driven Life. But don't expect this class to be boring; oftentimes, the Cooks allow plenty of room for discussion and laughs! Says Ruth Cook, "In our class, we talk and we participate. It's just a great class to be in."
Elective
Teacher: Dave Huntoon
Adult Target Groups: Young Adult, Midlife Adult
Mr. Huntoon has taught the Elective Sunday School class for over 20 years, considerably one of the oldest adult classes in our church! The reason why the class is called "Elective", according to Huntoon, is because the adults choose their lesson plans. Objectives in the Elective class include personal growth in God's greatness and applying faith-based qualities in everyday life. Some of Mr. Huntoon's resources include videos and short films reflecting Christian values. Open discussion and participation are strongly encouraged.
Lighthouse
Teacher: Clark Milleman
Adult Target Groups: Young Adult, Midlife Adult, Senior
Just as the name suggests, the Lighthouse Sunday School class is (literally) a beacon of light! Started by the late Cecil Dodrill, this Sunday School ministry encourages Christians in their walk with God and teaches them to understand that, young or old, God is not through with them just yet. "They should be examples to those who follow us," says former teacher John Henry. The class is active in both prayer ministry and card ministry, encouraging those who need to know that they are loved.
Although the Lighthouse class is predominantly senior citizens, all are welcome in the classroom.
Bible
Teachers: Mitch Booth & John Singleton
Adult Target Group: Senior
The Bible class is open to primarily retired senior citizens. "The main objective is to grow in the Spirit," says Mr. Booth. "We discuss everyday issues, and everyone here has a personal relationship with Christ. No matter how far along we are in Christian maturity, we still are growing in holiness."
But the class is more than just personal growth. "We survey the truth of Christianity", adds Booth. "It is no longer enough for Christians to believe something. We don't accept simple beliefs. You have to be able to explain your beliefs and defend them in growing skeptics who do not hold those same beliefs."
The Bible class also schedules activities every quarter outside the classroom, including social gatherings and shopping trips. Since 2014, Mr. Booth heads the senior group to Prime Time at Olivet Nazarene University in the fall. Though elderly, this class is very active and close-knit.
